Early accounts of shipwrecks often only listed the month of loss, so its hard to compile a list of them for a particular day. Even though many ships were undoubtedly lost on April 7, during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, most of the ones on this list are WWI and WWII losses, which are easier to trace. April 6 was another interesting day for shipwrecks with everything from the destruction of privateer ships in 1767 to a freighter that was blown up at her dock in 1944, scattering gold bars across the seafloor. Less than half of the bars have been recovered. Bars collectively worth tens of millions of dollars are still unfound. Lots of interesting shipwrecks took place on April 5, including a French warship in 1762 and two freighters torpedoed in 1943, which are believed to have carried tons of silver now worth millions of dollars. Over $16,000,000 in copper, vanadium, and zinc is on the wreck of the Dutch freighter Alphacca. The West Irmo is believed to have carried a valuable cargo of silver. Both went down the same day, April 4, 1942. There have been thousands of ships lost on a February 26, but one of the shipwrecks that stands out was that of the HMS Birkenhead, which set the example of “Women & Children First,” and was rumored to have carried three tons of gold coins. The remains of a World War Two bomber, thought to be a British Short Stirling lost off Norway on March 30, 1945, during a covert supply drop operation, have been found.
