Setting the record straight on who discovered the Hunley

This article tries to correct the damage caused by fiction writer Clive Cussler’s claims to have discovered the Civil War submarine Hunley in 1995, even though Dr. E. Lee Spence had found it in 1995 and had already published the wreck’s location in two of his non-fiction books. The Hunley was the first sub in history to sink an enemy ship and its discovery has been described as “probably the most important (underwater archaeological) find of the (20th) century.”

Jamie Guined has been selected by the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences as the 2016-17 recipient of a full-tuition scholarship to attend the International Diving Institute’s nationally accredited, four months long, Air/Mixed Gas Surface Supplied Diving Course.

NEWEST AUAS-IDI SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT: Jamie Guined has been selected as the 2016-17 recipient of the Academy of Underwater Arts and Science’s full-tuition scholarship to attend the International Diving Institute’s nationally accredited, four months long, Air/Mixed Gas Surface Supplied Diving Course, the completion of which results in certification that is required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for many types of diving jobs.
