When it comes to shipwrecks, today is an important date on the calendar. On April 8 1940, the Polish submarine Orzel torpedoed and sank the German ship Rio De Janeiro – thereby revealing the plans of the German invasion of Norway. Early accounts of shipwrecks often only listed the month of loss, so its hard to compile a list of them for a particular day. Even though many ships were undoubtedly lost on April 7, during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, most of the ones on this list are WWI and WWII losses, which are easier to trace.
