Spence, who found his first shipwrecks at age 12, discovered the wreck of the Georgiana in 1965 when he was just 17, and went on to become one of the pioneers of underwater archaeology. In 1970 he discovered the wreck of the Hunley, which had been the first submarine in history to sink an enemy ship. In 1972, he received one of the first five doctorates ever given in underwater archaeology anywhere in the world. In 2013 he was honored with a NOGI, which is the oldest and most prestigious award in diving.
